I recently took a trip to Saint Louis and on my way back I took a detour through the Augusta-area Missouri wine country. Oh my goodness, if you have never been, this should be your next trip! I plan to go back as soon as I can. In the next few weeks is an ideal time because of the fall colors, but I imagine it is stunning any time of year.
There are rolling hills, gorgeous scenery and old architecture around every corner. The old churches scattered throughout the country-side are just beautiful. There are rivers and farms, old bridges and wildlife... something to see for everyone. I visited the towns of Augusta and Washington, Missouri. Washington is on the beautiful Missouri River, and Augusta is an absolute treasure.
The area is known for wineries and vineyards, so if you like wine you will want to plan a tasting or ten. What brought me to the area, though, was Centennial Farms and Orchard. You can pick your own apples, get fresh apple cider and jarred preserves of all kind, and during October they have the Pumpkin Fantasyland, which I hear is a blast for the kids. I recommend their caramel apples, they are wonderful!
Driving through the area I also saw a sign for Pinckney Bend Distillery, where they make gin, corn whiskey and other spirits. Although I didn't have time to go, I did see that TripAdviser.com gives the distillery very high ratings for their tour and tasting room so I plan to visit on my next trip.
You can camp in beautiful Meramec State Park or other state parks in the region. A little further away, but possibly worth the trip if you want activities for the family, is Blue Springs Ranch. I haven't stayed there personally but I did drive through once (several years back) and it looked beautiful. They offer float trips, horseback riding, zip-lining and more.
If you travel with, in, or on a motorcycle or sports car, you will love the winding roads through the countryside.
You should definitely plan a trip to the region, I am sure you won't be disappointed!
