Garryowen, Montana → West Yellowstone, Montana

Travel Time: 5 hours, 5 minutes.

Note: You can cut the drive time down to 4 hours and 42 minutes by going through Bozeman and skipping the optional points of interest.

Today's drive takes you west through Big Sky Country and into one of the most famous entrances in the National Park System, before wrapping up at the edge of Yellowstone itself.

Optional Points of Interest Along the Way:

  • Roosevelt Arch (Gardiner, MT) — Dedicated by Theodore Roosevelt in 1903, this iconic stone archway marks Yellowstone's historic North Entrance and bears the inscription "For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People." A must-see photo stop and a fitting gateway into the park.
  • Sneak Peak: Drive Through Yellowstone National Park — From the North Entrance, the route continues south through the park itself, passing through Mammoth Hot Springs, Norris, and Madison before reaching the West Entrance — offering a scenic preview of the park's dramatic geothermal features and wildlife along the way. Slow traffic is very common in Yellowstone, though, so be prepared to slow down, and even come to a stop in places.

Where to Camp:

Camping inside Yellowstone is limited and books up fast, especially in peak season, but there are several private RV parks in the area. KOA's include Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday, Yellowstone Park / Mountainside KOA Journey, and Island Park KOA Holiday.
