Custer State Park, South Dakota → Garryowen, Montana

Travel Time: 5 hours, 22 minutes

Note: Travel time includes the route by Devils Tower but doesn't include visiting time, so plan accordingly. You may even want to add another night to your trip to fully enjoy Devils Tower and the Little Bighorn Battlefield. The optional stop at Aladdin, Wyoming increases the total drive time to 6 hours and 16 minutes.

Today is a travel day packed with iconic western history, starting with a stop at one of America's most striking natural landmarks before continuing on to the site of one of the most famous battles in U.S. history.

Optional Points of Interest Along the Way:

  • Devils Tower National Monument — America's first national monument, this dramatic 867-foot rock formation rises straight up out of the Wyoming plains. Walk the 1.3-mile Tower Trail that loops its base for stunning up-close views.
  • Aladdin, Wyoming (Optional Detour) — For travelers willing to add almost an hour to the trip, the tiny town of Aladdin — population 15 — is home to the Aladdin General Store, Wyoming's oldest continuously operating general store, open since 1896. It's a genuine slice of Old West history, with friendly service and a truly unique, off-the-beaten-path experience you won't find anywhere else.
  • Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument — Walk the hallowed grounds where Lt. Col. George Custer and the 7th Cavalry made their last stand against combined Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho forces. Interpretive trails, markers, and a visitor center bring the story of the battle to life.

Where to Camp:

7th Ranch RV Camp — Located just minutes from Little Bighorn Battlefield in Garryowen, Montana, this cattle ranch turned top-rated RV park offers long pull-through sites with full hookups (water, electric, sewer), free Wi-Fi, and sweeping views of the Bighorn Mountains and Little Bighorn River Valley. A warm welcome (and often a free ice cream bar at check-in!) makes it a favorite stop for history-minded travelers.
